This is my stitching diagram for when I sew up books. This will need some explanation. On this diagram I have included a 4 signature layout and a 2 signature layout. The 4 signature layout is on the left and the 2 signature layout is on the right. I will explain the 2 signature layout first.

I have tried to explain what my little symbols mean in my bad handwriting. The dots represent the holes you will sew through. To start a book you will want to poke holes in the cover and in the signatures, you want to make sure that the holes line up because you will be sewing these together. The starting point is where you first start sewing. Start on the inside of a signature and push your needle through the corresponding hole in the signature and on the cover. The ) symbol indicates when you are inside the signature and the ( symbol indicates when you are outside the book on the spine, the top and bottom symbols are also both outside the book.

With the 2 signature layout start in the middle of the second signature sew your way up to the top, move over to the first signature, sew your way down, move over to the second signature and end in the middle. Once you have sewed the entire book together tie the ends of the thread together using a very secure knot. For thread I used to use waxed embroidery floss (that I waxed with beeswax) , but now I used leather-working thread which is pre-waxed.

The 4 signature layout is a bit more complicated. Starting in the second signature start in the middle, work your way up to the top and like the 2 signature book move over to the first signature, sew down that signature and move back over to the second signature, this time though instead of stopping halfway up go all the way to the top of the signature and move over to the third signature, sew down this signature and at the bottom move over to the forth signature, sew up this signature and at the top move back over to the third signature and sew down it again, this time at the bottom of the signature move back over to the second signature and sew up it to the middle. Once at the middle tie off the book and you are done. The places where you sew a signature twice I have represented with (( or )).

I hope this diagram and explanation have helped. :)

What if you have more than 2 or 4 signatures?

Then I would sit down and figure out how it could work, figuring out a stitching pattern is kind of like figuring out a puzzle for me.

Ok, so I sat down and looked at it, you would want to make sure that you had even numbered signatures. Like 6 or 8 or 10. What you would want to do is a variant of the 4 signature stitch job. You would start on the second signature go up and then stitch down the first signature then stitch up the second signature, stitch down the third, stitch up the forth, stitch down the fifth, stitch up the sixth, then at the top go back to the fifth signature and stitch down it a second time, stitch up the forth a second time, stitch down the third a second time and then stitch half way up the second signature and meet up where you started. Same thing would work for an 8 or 10 signature book. One word of caution though, the more pages you put in a book the harder it is for the leather to lay nice and flat, so when making the book keep this in mind.
